Q&A with Dr. Yijiao Fan
Meet Dr. Fan: Our Newest Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon!
What Inspired You to Pursue Dentistry?
Where I grew up, there was not a lot of emphasis placed on going to the dentist. Everyone simply accepted having painful rotten teeth. When my family and I moved, this time to a community where oral health was valued, I saw first-hand the difference good dentistry can do. There’s something inexplicably but obviously attractive about a person with a healthy beautiful smile. I became a dentist so that I can help the people in my community have their healthy beautiful smiles.
When Did You Decide to Further Your Expertise into Oral Surgery?
Oral Surgery is the most challenging dental specialty. I was looking for a challenge coming out of dental school to further build upon my education. In the operating rooms, I got to treat unbelievable ailments, such as facial injuries from firearms and car crashes, tumors and cancers of the head and neck, and life-threatening dental infections. I saw countless patients with dentitions in all sorts of disrepair and learned how to help them. Having completed an intensive Oral Surgery training program, I feel better equipped to help my patients with their needs.
